Welcome to the August 2020 Edition of SMB Spotlight

Well it’s hard to believe that we are now well and truly into FY21 and things couldn’t look more different than they did this time last year. Whilst our Queensland team have a certain level of freedom, our Victorian team are suffering through stage 3 and 4 lockdowns, depending on location. We have all be working from home in the main, however, since late March so while we aren’t in our office, we are still absolutely available to discuss any matters on the phone or in a Zoom/Teams (or equivalent) call. The lockdown period also hasn’t stopped us from conducting training sessions which we are now doing by webinar. So whilst it’s business out of the office, in essence it’s still business as usual.

This month we have interesting topics to discuss in relation to both personal and corporate insolvency. Whilst our Spotlight on Personal Insolvency is a flashback to an article written some time ago, we thought a refresher would be useful as we have recently come across a few instances in practice where creditors have potentially put their security at risk in a bankruptcy scenario. Conversely, our Spotlight on Corporate Insolvency takes a look at the new Director Identification Number regime.

In case you missed it, SMB Partner, Andrew MacNeill was awarded an Order of Australia Medal earlier this year. We’ve taken this opportunity to get to know Andrew a little better in our Team Spotlight piece.

We understand that this has been a difficult and confusing time for many people, and that it is important to get the right information out to businesses in distress. Please reach out if there’s any matters with which we can assist.

Cheers, Justin, Alice, Andrew & the SMB Team.
